Fire Escape Removal Forces Frustrated Tenants From Homes

Imagine suddenly learning that you -- and everyone else in your building -- must gather your belongings and live elsewhere for months.

That's what happened this week to some 200 tenants of a New York City apartment building, who received a vacate notice from the city after a finding that the structure was dangerous.

Recently, the building's owners removed the fire escapes in connection with a renovation project, which created an unsafe condition, according to a report from NBC 4 New York.

The owners reportedly offered all tenants the option of temporarily living in another building with three months' free rent or accepting $840 per week in hotel vouchers. Replacement of the fire escapes is expected to take months.
